Over-huipil

Nebaj, Quiché

Linguistic community: Ixil

This garment is made with two cloth panels woven on a backstrap loom with cotton yarn. The geometric, zoomorphic and phytomorphic designs were brocaded using supplementary wefts of mercerized cotton. It features birds and a donkey carrying a small bird next to a corn plant. These are all characters from a Jebaj legend. The round neckline is decorated with an application of cloth and crochet chains made with acrylic yarn, that were machine-sewn into the huipil. The warp lines and the horizontal rows form a grid on the cloth panels, in which each figure occupies its own square.
